Solon Township welcomes you!
Solon Township is located on the northern boundary of Kent County, sharing a border with Newaygo County and Montcalm County. The township contains the highest point in Kent County at Fisk Knob, which is approximately 1075 feet in elevation. Its school districts include Cedar Springs Public Schools, Kent City Community Schools, Tri-County Area Schools and Grant Public Schools.
For many years prior to the mid-20th century, little change was noticed in the Solon Township community. Farming dominated the landscape and population increase was slow. That changed with the advent of US-131 when it, and other highways like it, spurred movement from urban centers to suburban and rural areas.
The presence of an interchange with US-131 and M-46 fueled demand for new homes and businesses in the township. Surveys sent to residents indicated the two characteristics most valued by respondents were the township’s rural character and ease of access to Grand Rapids. Those factors remained a constant influence over the years as the community continued its comparatively high rate of growth. The latest census shows a population increase from 4,662 residents in 2000 to 5,974 residents in 2010.
Several neighborhoods dot the landscape now, but agriculture remains an essential part of the culture and character of the township. The numerous lakes and streams and the Rogue River State Game Area are also important features in the township.
